About the Event
Rumba is a Cuban music and dance genre that originated in Matanzas, located on the northern shore east of Havana, during the 19th century. Members of the community would gather and perform this dance as a display of self-expression, freedom, and vitality. Originally associated with the working class, Rumba is recognized as an essential display of Cuban culture, and is still taught throughout the island and around the world.
There are three styles of Rumba: yambú, guaguancó and columbia.
This 2-hour workshop will focus on finding freedom within your body, and connecting movement to the music of Rumba. Beginning with a warmup, we will delve into movements of the shoulders, arms, torso, and hips. Musicality will be interwoven throughout these exercises, as we will discuss the percussion & instrumentation. Next, we will cover the foundational footwork of Rumba going across the floor. Finally, the remainder of the workshop will consist of various phrases combining all of the movements covered!
The workshop is $20 in advance & $25 at the door.
